Coast Guard Station Jetty
Fishing this jetty requires access to the Coast Guard station and adherence to a few base regulations. This fishing spot provides Cape May Inlet access, which may be a good location based on the weather and location of forage. This would be a decent spot to launch a kayak – either from the jetty (least preferred) or the beach (most preferred). If the beach is off limits for launching, the jetty will have to do.
Per the sign, this Jetty is closed 1 Jan – 15 March and one must have a Jetty pass issued. Oh…and the buddy system. Fish make good buddies, right? Safety is paramount. Fish On!
Downs Gut – Cape May
Downs Gut is a spot in the bay one can fish from a boat, kayak or wade. In July 2021, I parked the truck in the parking lot near the Two Mile Crab House and sent the hook out as far as I could. I didn’t have much time to fish so I kept the kayak loaded on the bed rack and used the rod holders to soak some bait I got from Cape May Bait and Tackle. The bait being soaked was some live bloodworms. I got a few bites, but nothing that would kindly hook itself for me so I decided to wade fish to get the the hook out a little farther. I also tried some Gulp lures, as well, hoping for some flounder. The word was that flounder fishing was pretty good there, as well as some other spots in the creeks and bay of Jarvis Sound.
Higbee Beach
Higbee Beach sits at the entrance of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. One can surf fish, launch a kayak or fish the jetties at Higbee Beach. When we went in July of 2021, there were many Horseshoe Crabs washed ashore, most were dead or were actually the leftover shell after molting. A few were still alive so I turned them right side up and off they went – slowly.
This beach is part of the Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area. There is a small parking lot at the NW section of West Cape May that can get full quickly during peak times. Best to get there early and grab a spot. The beach is secluded and quiet compared to the main city beaches and it doesn’t require a beach pass, either.

The Depot Travel Park
The Depot Travel Park in West Cape May, NJ. The closest RV Park to the beach in Cape May. We stayed here in July of 2021. The facilities are very clean and we were very happy with the services provided. One improvement could be beginning the acceptance of Credit Cards. As of July 2021, they only took cash or check. Thus, to reserve a spot, we needed to send a check in the mail (check writing is a lost art, right?). No worries though. There is a small farm market (Duckie’s) at the entrance near the main road and they had some great items that we thoroughly enjoyed.
The RV Park is close to many Cape May attractions as well as some good fishing spots and Cape May Bait and Tackle. The tackle shop attendant was friendly and had some great advice and tips.
